Before buying something, it’s really common to ask about it further. The thing you’ll ask yourself is different, depending on the person. It also has to happen before you buy a fastener. Fastener is a system to fasten every piece of your building. It related to the purpose of the building itself. So, you need to understand about the fastener you want to buy.
At least, there’s 4 questions you need to ask before but fastener.
What type of material and coating?
The material for fastening systems can vary from low carbon steel to exotic alloys. What material coating the fastener also ranges from plain finish to performance specific coatings. To determine the right material and/or finish a person must first understand three vital areas, which is:
- The application
- Performance requirements
- Environment in which the fastener will be exposed.
If you are able to put your hands on a sample of the fastener in question, look carefully at the item and search for any distinguishing markings. Most will have a letter, number or the combination of the two which symbolizes exactly what material the fastener is made of. This will enable the fastener experts to give you the correct material that you are requesting.
What Size?
You need to know that sizes of fasteners range between standard and metric sizes. The standard one has a diameter of ¼”, 3/8”, 1” and the metric has 10mm, 20mm, etc as a size. Threads per inch for Standard measured as the number of threads in a one inch area. Remember, always skip the 1st thread when counting the number of threads. And thread pitch for Metric measured by the distance between the pitch (or top of each thread) in millimeters. Length of fasteners also need to be thinked about.
What type?
There are many different types of fasteners designed for specific purposes and applications. Some common types are Hex Head Cap Screw (most common, usually referred to as a bolt but there is a distinct difference), Heavy Hex Bolt, and Socket Drive Screws (socket head cap screw, socket set screw, etc.). You should also consider what type of drive you want for your fastener, whether it’s hex head, socket, Phillips, slotted, security, or something else.
Do they understand?
Nothing compares the knowledge of people who understand this field so much. Purchasing fasteners has the potential to be a time consuming and exhausting task. Then imagine all the hard work done with the help of someone who knows about this kind of thing. Isn’t that amazing?
